Peace and security are essential factors for
development. For a country to have development it requires a peaceful, secure
and conflict free environment, in most cases such an environment attracts not
only local but foreign investments which bring about development. It is
important to talk about peace building given the fact that the current types of
conflicts have acquired new dimensions. There is great need for leaders and
stake holders to take responsibilities to prevent conflicts and also prevent
repetition of atrocities.
We can appreciate the current trend of recovery in our
country in terms of development and security, but there are still a number of underlying
factors of conflicts and insecurities which need to be addressed and these involve high levels of unemployment among youth, economic differences, and deprived population.
The lack of sustained awareness to the public and weak
advocacy for the insecurities also attributes to continued instabilities in the
country and thus disrupts the already existing security and peace among the
people.
Development reduces significantly due to conflicts and
insecurity; aspects of development are tremendously affected as a result of
conflicts. They not only destroy the
economy and infrastructure but also bring about famine, malnutrition and
displacement of so many people who are forced into camps. There are number of
problems associated with displacement of people for instance poverty,
inadequate food because they mostly depend on food Aid, no access to safe
drinking water, poor hygiene and sanitation which sees a lot of people
suffering and dying from diseases like cholera. All these deprive people of
their freedom.
There is need of addressing the root causes of
conflicts and insecurities because such conflicts destroy communities and
disrupt social and economic developments hence undermining all efforts of
elimination of poverty and health related issues.
Preventing conflicts and violence allow communities to
prosper and achieve sustainable development.
