Bring youths on board, shape a better tomorrow

According to UNFPA, today’s youth are 1.8 billion and make up one quarter of the worlds population. This number of youth is enough to influence the global social and economic welfare. Social welfare, inclusive of peace and security is vital for sustainable development in the world we live in. It is notable that youths have been overshadowed in governments organisations and intergovernmental organisations to mention the United Nations at large.

Overshadowing youths in the development issues has given rebel groups, politicians and terrorists a way for recruitment of them in different rebellious activities. This is because the youths are able bodied and full of vitality. Their youthfulness makes their minds susceptible to being polluted with negative ideologies of wars, conflict, riots and disruption of peace and security in general. Curiosity killed the cat but at the same time it reveals hidden truths. In that way, it is with utmost curiosity that I pose this question, “why is it that, all development partners have put no emphasis for youth engagement in development activities yet the youth are considered the leaders of tomorrow and the next generation?” It would seem obvious from the outset that incorporating youths in the all development programmes was and is a pre requisite to furthering different and meeting future targets; after all, youths are the future. May be we should accept the fact that their is no such a thing as perfection or rather relate it to anomalies like a person who prints the United States currency not being the richest. We can give all reasons and excuses but I believe that cannot help.

There are sayings, “we learn from our mistakes,” and “it is never too late.” Thank GOD there is room to correct our mistakes because the last time I've checked, time has not yet stilled. In the new development frame work (The Post 2015 Development Agenda), emphasis should be put on the youths and all development partners are encouraged to gear efforts towards keeping the youth engaged in development activities lest their energies be put to the disruption of peace and security for if that’s not the case, they will be left idle and we all are aware of, “an idle mind is a devil’s workshop.”

  1. Youths are the leaders of tomorrow so they must get on board now to be fully prepared to drive the world tomorrow through their generation to the next.
